SISTAR‘s Hyorin confessed that she suffered from biliary atresia when she was younger.
She had confessed of the matter in the past, but her illness was brought up again to attention, possibly because of the upcoming ‘Idol Star Athletics Championship‘.
Hyorin stated, “Now, I have a healthy image, but when I was born, I wasn’t healthy. I was born prematurely and during my mothers pregnancy, there was a fluid buildup in my abdomen (hydrops abdominis), I weighed 4.2 kg / 9.4 lbs (most of the weight from the fluid buildup) and I was in a incubator. My liver couldn’t produce bile and perform what it was supposed to do, so I developed the liver disease, biliary atresia. When I got surgery, my father was by my side the entire time and I received a blood transfusion. I had surgery for over 10 hours. After that, about a year later while I was recovering, I was rushed to the hospital for intussusception (When a part of intestine folds into another section of the intestine), and I had to receive open-stomach surgery twice. I don’t have a gall bladder anymore because of my surgeries.”
Biliary atresia is a serious disease that can kill children under the age of 2 if not treated immediately.
